Hodgkins lymphoma and radiotherapy.

Hello everyone!

Safe to say this year has been a difficult one. In may my 9 year old son was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkins lymphoma. He has just finished six months of chemotherapy. We were very lucky that in that whole six months , he never had to return to the ward. No infections, no sickness. Nothing. He has been a wee trooper!!

On Monday the 31st October,  he will begin radiotherapy. I received all the paperwork and fact sheets telling me the what to expect stuff eg. He will need penicillin in definently and may need thyroid medication. They are working from his neck to his hips. The good news is his fertility shouldn't be affected in the future as they are stopping just above that area.

I'm nervous for him. Not just for the immediate side effects but for his long term health. Has anyone been through this? How can I help him? How have people responded? Has anyone had any of the long term side effects affect thier daily lives? So many questions. All of this is a new world for us but going from chemotherapy to radiotherapy is like starting all over again.

Thank you

Xxx

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Lorzm,

I'm so sorry to hear that your son was diagnosed with stage 4 hodgkins lymphoma but I'm really glad to hear he has responded well to the chemotherapy. He does indeed sound like a wee trooper :)

It's understandable why you may be feeling nervous and I have found some information on our website about radiotherapy for hodgkins lymphoma which may help as it includes possible long term side effects from the treatment. Do feel free to give our cancer nurses a call as well as they'll be able to answer some of the questions you've mentioned above. The nurses are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m-5p.m on 0808 800 4040.

I know there are a few members on the forum who have had experience with hodgkins lymphoma and hopefully they will reply soon to offer their support and share their experiences with you as well.

Stay strong Lormz and remember we are here for you if you need us.

Wishing your son all the best for his radiotherapy. Do come back and let us know how he gets on.

  • Hi

sounds like you have had a tough time im glad though that your little man is responding well.

I was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma 4 years ago and was given radiotherapy to the abdomen and chest. Radiotherapy was hard as I became tired easily and it left my skin quite red and tender but the hospital where fantastic and prescribed moisteraiser to help and gave me lots of information. I can't help with questions about fertility but I was told that due to my age it was less likely to affect and if it did I was young enough for it to correct itself. Hope this helps
