Brother with a Brain tumour

My brother has been diagnosed with a Glioblastoma Multiforme grade 4. We have been told there is nothing that can be done and he has maybe 12 weeks to live, that was 4 weeks ago after 3.5 weeks in hopsital. Does anybody know anything about how this progresses because we ahve been told nothing by the medical professionals about this. Paranoia is now happening more frequently.

  • Oh Rose I understand.  My mom has also recently been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and given a very short life expectancy.  We just need to understand what is and what will happen.  We all love her so much it is horrendous not knowing what to do.  I will updat you if I find any help.

My heart is with you and your family.

  • hi rose j,   your brother will really need your support. I have managed to find out some things, mainly that they sleep a lot and have trouble swallowing, and can possibly have fits. it will be hard, but we will stay strong for them, YOUR BROTHER and my DAD.

  • it depends whereabouts in the brain the tumour is to affect it will affect your brother. My mum was diagnosed with hers at the beginning of sept 2011 and she passed away on 3rd Jan 2012. Hers was on the left side of her brain so affected her right side. After her biopsy she was paralysed down her right side. She was never in any pain. We were told at the end she'd go into a coma for a few days but in the end on was only for 3 hours. Speak to his consultant so you can at least try and be a bit prepared. Will be thinking of you
  • Hello Alice

my mom was diagnosed in September, we have struggled to find out what will happen.  She has had no treatment as it was so advanced. She sleeps a lot, answers questions sometimes she seems to go off into a dream. Her tumour in in the frontal lob on the right she can only move her right hand and leg, which she keeps doing the whole time she is awake. I left her tonight and she was breathing really heavy I feel so sad I don't know what she understands. We have been told she may survive 3 months. How did you cope? X

  • my mum didn't have any treatment either apart from steroids - is your mum on them? It meant my mum had a huge appetite! We were told by the doctors how long she had, she didn't want to know. She only lasted a couple of weeks' longer than they said she would. I think we just powered through when she was here. My dad said he did his grieving when she was ill, I find it very hard as he met someone else only 8 months afterwards and he's a typical man who doesn't really talk about his feelings. Do you have family around to help?
  • hi floss, its cococat  here,    its best to think she can understand whats going on, and just be there as often as you can.  remember look after yourself too.

  • thankyou alice 101, for your reply, im so sorry about your mom, it must be hard it being such a short time. i understand. my dads grade 4, is on the right side of his brain, they opparated behind his ear and basically scooped out as much of the tumour as could.

  • Hello - thanks for your reply.  Mom is on steroids and she also has a great appetite eats most of what she is fed.  Tonight I went to see her on my home from work - and we had a short conversation which is something that hadn't happened for weeks as she is either asleep or just nods in answer to questions.  It lasted a few minutes then she stopped again. It's a real roller coaster ride.  I have a close family around me I am part of a big family, but we are all just in shock and don't understand what's happening.   Like you say when I am alone I just cry and cry with total sadness and frustration.   I wish we had had some warning but she has always been so strong and always there.

I appreciate your support and take strength from your strength.

    Thanks
