  • Hi Misty

Its so hard to get enough calories when your mouth and throat get so sore. Is he using Calphosol 2 part mouthwash? this is good stuff and should be used frequently 8 times a day or more. Also buy a soft toothbrush and keep up good oral hygeine. Also has he been advised to use high energy liquid foods like fortisip there are fruit ones and the milky ones which are hard to choke down, if you mix them with milk to produce a milk shake they go down easier. Things get further complicated as he will lose his sense of taste so nothing is appetising and severe dry mouth doesnt help. So make soft sloppy foods that have a nice aroma, also keep mouth moist with a spray or regular sips water. My favourites were rice pudding, custard, porridge, runny cottage pie, ice cream, omelettes anything egg based really. Homemade soups add some cream for calories. Obviously alcohol and spicy foods are out and acid stuff like vinigar and citrus fruits. You can get some liquid paracetamol to take an hour or so before eating to help manage the pain. He may need the services of a speech therapist to help him with regaining the swallowing reflex if he loses it, his hospital will arrange this. Give him as much help as you can as this treatment really takes some getting through. Kim
