Radio therapy

Hi everyone

my dad has been called in to see his oncologist much earlier than the agreed appointment date.  It looks like he is going to be told that the prostectomy surgery and biopsy of surrounding tissue still has cancer cells. His appointment is 6.30 today.  After talking with cancer nurse she thinks it's a possibility he will be offered  radiotherapy.  Within his prostate one side was slow growing cancer and the other side an aggressive type.  Hence the surgery to remove his prostate 3weeks ago.  What is radio therapy like is it as bad as chemo for side effects.

Thanks

  • Hi Kate,

When I had 37 sessions for my prostate, I didnt have hardly any side effects. The main ones are it can give you the runs but I took I moduim Instants and never had any problems. It can make you tired particulary towards the end of the treatment but I did as the nursed advised, If I felt tired I went and had a lie down for a short while. My wife bought some Simple soap as R/THERAPY  can sometimes make the skin very sore.  I never had any problem because of this. The main thing is to drink plenty of water before the treatment session. The nurses were always asking if I had drunk plenty of water and one day I replied if I were to drink anymore I would resemble a camel. Quick as as flash she replied a one hump or two hump camel ha ha.

In some places they are now giving only about 20 sessions but a higher dose each time. They have found this results in the same level of treatment but with less side effects for the patient, which has to be good.

If I can help at all please feel free to ask. Best wishes to you and your dad, Brian.
