My mum is 64 and has stage 4 cancer in 3 area, need help

Hi

My mum was diagnoised this having stage 4 metastatic cancer in her heart, left lung and 2 of her ribs. She is controlling her pain with alot of morphine and it's being under constant supervision. She has had one set of chemo which did control the cancer in those areas. How ever a follow up scan indicated that it had then started to grow. She has begun another set of chemo but her breathing has got worse and now has to go and have a mugga scan (sorry for the spelling). What I find really frustrating as I don't know what is to come, can she keep increasing her morphine? I know it's difficult to say how long she will have but has anyone else had an instance of this and how long was there loved one around for?

She is at home and my brothers family moved in so they could give her constant care, but what does the future hold, what will happen??

We had a macmillan nurse once but they didn't seem to be that much use in helping us to understand what is going to happen. I really would like to hear other peoples experiences.

  • Hello lindsey878,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I am sorry to hear about your mum. What a difficult time it must be for her and for those around her.  I hope she is managing to control her pain well with morphine. We have some information on our site on morphine which you can read here and  I would suggest you also ask your mum's medical team about it as they will be in the best position to advise you on this. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ring our nurse helpline on this free number if you are based in the UK 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope you will hear from other people's experiences. I know many of our members have been in a similar position before and I hope they will come and share their story with you. It can help to talk to someone who has been through this before or who is currently going through a similar experience.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
