Looking for support

hi I have just signed in today and my story is is about my best friend ( my dad) he has mouth and neck cancer and has his pre op tomorrow! I am dreading going with him to hear the details as I know I need to be positive and strong for him however I'm not feeling it at all! They said he will spend three weeks in hospital then followed by 6weeks of radiotherapy ! I'm very concerned and keep thinking about his quality of life after the operation as a tracheostomy has been mentioned so things after the operation will be very different ! This is all I can bring myself to say right now as I am completely overcome by emotions xx

  • Hello Winning,

Hope that the pre-op went smoothly today and that some of your questions may have been answered.

Understandably this is a difficult and uncertain time for you all. We have quite a number of members here at Cancer Chat who have had experiences with mouth and neck cancer although not all of them log in regularly. There is a thread here that many of them have posted on and I'll pop a comment on there asking if anyone is able to drop by and respond to your thread.

If you feel that you would like to talk to one of our nurses then please do give them a call. They are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 (free to call from a UK landline).

Do drop by and let us know how things are going and we will do our best to support you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi winning,

i hope your dads pre op went well today, my dads got stage 4 lung cancer, I know how you feel it's horrible

    xx

  • Hi

i am very sorry to hear about your dad xxx the feeling is horrible though it's vital to remain positive ! My dad is now in the queen Elizabeth hospital ( Glasgow) and his operation is tomorrow . Strange as I honestly drew strength from somewhere today and during all the pre op stuff I asked all the relevant questions and was very pro active in it all x I just keep thinking the situation is where we are and it can't be changed so hot my more positive hat on and as long as that comes shining through to my dad then I'm sure it will/does have a knock on affect

  • Thanks so much x the staff today at The Queen Elizabeth hospital were fantastic and very thorough and I have every faith in there expertise and all the rest of it x my dad has a god team caring for him and I feel better for seeing that today x

  • Hi,

glad pre-op went ok.  I know what you mean about strength from somewhere I think you just get it when you need to for someone else.  Glad you got your questions answered too.

Thanks for your wishes for my dad.  I hope tomorrow goes well.

  • Thank you dawn x is there anything I can help you with ?? I am not up to speed with stages of cancer and your dad has stage 4, what does that mean as that has never been discussed in terms of my own dad and was not aware of stages ? Hope you are as ok as you can be xx

    Hugs

    Kirsty

  • Hi Kirsty,

im ok thanks anyway, I  have good days and bad today's not bad, was in tears all day Sunday Monday but I'm a bit stronger now.  Poor dad has stage 4 lung cancer so it's not curable stage 4 means its spread from its primary location which was the lungs to his lymph nodes in his shoulder.  But he is having chemo at the moment to hopefully slow the cancer down and make him more comfortable.  Don't know what the future holds just  trying  to spend as much time with him as possible he's only 67 im 38 I just didn't expect this its all happened very quickly he only got diagnosed late feb.

Hopefully your dad will be fine it sounds like it's treatable, which is great.

the cancer teams/hospitals are so great arnt they my mum and dad love in Cambridge and it's excellent staff there so caring.

    glad u r feeling a bit better
