Aunt with Rectal cancer - how can I help

Hi, my aunt was diagnosed with rectal cancer just before Christmas and is starting radiotherapy sessions (along with chemo tablets) today.  Needless to say we were all devastated by the news (she lived with us growing up, so is like a second mother), but sometimes feel so helpless.  I've been with her at all appointments to date, but still feel powerless to help.

I was wondering if anyone has any small ways in which I might be able to help.  I know she's to make sure she keeps hydrated, so I was going to buy her a nice water infuser bottle today, to help her keep drinking liquids, and have got her some doublebase emollient as I know the hands can get sensitive etc.  If anyone has any other ideas of what we can do to make the next 5 weeks of treatment any easier for her, that would be great.

Many thanks x

  • Hi Tapole,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I know we have quite a few members with experience of rectal cancer or who have been looking after a loved one who has rectal cancer and I am sure they will have some great suggestions for you. The water infuser bottle idea and the doublebase emollient would certainly be lovely gestures on your part but I think that you simply being there for her means a lot to her. She must really appreciate having you by her side at all the appointments.

I will now let our other members share their thoughts with you. You will see they are a great bunch here!

    Best wishes,
