Looking for advice on what we should do now!

This is the first time I have been affected by Cancer as an adult, my father has Skin Cancer, but despite Radiotherapy it seems it is still progressing and has now got to the base of his head.  So it isnt looking very good at all and he is pretty elderly.  Ive more or less accepted that he is on his way out, bless him, and trying to do my best for him and my mother in the meantime.  I think he still thinks at this stage he is going to get through it, though Mum believes, probably rightly so, that he isnt.  She doesnt share her view with him obviously.  Our/my biggest issue right now is that since the Radiotherapy two months ago he has lost appetite.  One side of his face fell (like a stroke effect?) a week after the treatment finished.  He has great difficulty chewing and now almost wont.  Mum gives him soups all the time but I am struggling with her not adapting to changing a diet that they have followed all their married lives....and him being bored with soup.  I managed to get them using Complan but he is losing weight all the time.  The other problem is if feels that until the specialists who have been looking after him finally tell him their plan if any...no one is advising Mum and Dad about how they should be handling this......I live a long way from them and whilst willing to spend every waking moment with them, Mother doesnt want that just now, so Im doing the best I can with visiting and urging different things every couple of weeks.  Im going to ring the Cancer Research Nurse number tomorrow, having found this site this afternoon, thankfully. I have also copied the information about meal supplements available on prescription.  Im having trouble with "specialists" and Dad's own "doctor" not having a very "joined up" way of helping Dad at the moment!!!

  • Hi

When my husband was ill and not eating hardly anything soild at all as it was too difficult, his oncologist got him on to the meal shakes and these are available on prescription (our GP sorted it all for us once she had details from the oncologist). There are many different types/flavours.  We were also referred to the dietician who advised us to add double cream to anything possible to boost calorie intake. My husband was happy to eat bars of chocolate and snacked through the day (left on the table by his side so that he could help himself rather than having to ask all the time). It was little and often and helped for a while before the cancer took him beyond eating at all and then it was purely a case of liquids. I really used to prepare small amouts which he found more manageable rather than normal sized meals which just put him off.

Hope  you manage a chat with the nurses and they have given you some help. All the best  Jules
