Worried....!!!

Hi everyone....my apologies if you think this is misplaced ....my husband came out of hospital after being admitted with a suspected stroke. It wasn't thankfully, however once the paralysis had subsided he had pain in his leg and arm. He had been discharged whilst still paralysed and unable to speak. I took him back to our GP...whom sent him straight back to hospital. They found DVTs in his arm and leg, again another 3 days waiting for a scan of his leg and arm. When we went for the ultra sound we thought it was going to be straight forward and that he would be given tablets and monitored.    What a shock when the nurses called the on call consultant down and told my other half that he has cancer but they where unsure where.       As you can imagine our world fell apart and we where told he has to have a CT scan.  Which is next week, he has sever pain in his abdomen groin and legs. He's also lost a serious amount of weight. Can anyone pls tell us whether we should be told information after the scans or will we have to wait again. The hospital up till now have not been very helpful.

  • Hi there, welcome to the forum, but sorry for the reason you are here. I'm shocked that this information has been given to you in this manner. One has to ask, where is the concern and compassion? They treated this like it was telling you that he needs a tooth extraction or something trivial. I don't know about where you are in this world, but here in Canada, I would suggest a letter to the patient representative would be in order. I believe people who work in the field of health sometimes need a wake up call and this would certainly be a good example of such. Getting back to your question however, after your husband has a scan, there certainly is a period of time that you have to wait for the results before they can make a plan for treatment. That part of this makes sense, but up until now, the hospital seems to have a disconnect between medical team and patient/family. You are perfectly within your right to ask them to tell you what they know so far, and what they plan to do from here. Also, tell them that you want to be kept informed on whatever information becomes available to them. I know from experience that this can sometimes be a slow process when waiting for results of scans, X-rays etc. and we need to be patient for those results, but when they know, you should know.

Come back on to the forum and let us know how you get along with it. In the meantime, ask the questions; you do have a right to know.

    Take care.
