Chemotherapy side effects

My mother has recently undergone treatment for breast cancer, having a number of ops and finally removing the cancer from this area. She has just had her second dose of chemo, and has been experiencing bleeding from her bowels? Had anyone else experienced this? She is really stubborn and refuses to believe it could be a serious issue.

  • Hello LplusD,

We have some information on chemotherapy side effects here. I hope you find it useful, but I would also recommend you ring our nurses and talk to them about your mum's bleeding from her bowels.

If you are based in the UK, do pick up the phone on Monday and ring this free number 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I would also mention it to your mum's consultant and get their advice on this.

Welcome to the forum - you will meet some great people here also caring for a loved one with cancer who will support you and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi

Can see that the lovely Lucie has given you a handly link and the nurses number to call.  I thought I would welcome you to the forum and can understand your concern at Mum's symptoms.  Telling the team that are treating Mum would definitely be number one on the list as soon as possible as they like to know of any side effects so they can be looked into/treated as soon as they appear.  My husband had a few bowel problems caused by his chemo and this was mainly due to constipation which they prescribed medication for (the over-straining had caused a tiny split which took a little time to repair). Your Mum probably comes from the old school of thought about not wanting to bother anyone (hubby was much the same and I often had to remind him of the questions that needed to be asked/answered) but hope she will be able to chat to someone about this.  All the best  Jules54
