tamoxifen questions

Hi all. Sorry for the long intro, I am very new to this!  My lovely aunt (56 years old, she is from Cyprus and currently lives there) was diagnosed with endometrial cancer last November(we were never told exactly what type etc, but it was advanced, stage 3, as it spread to some of her lymph nodes. Doctors in Cyprus are never informative, as if that will help anyone). She had chemotherapy (carboplatin and taxol) for 4 months ( the side effects were really bad for her) and told her that the tumour on her womb has shrunk. But, the cancer spread more on her lymph notes (just outside her intestines) so she is now taking tamoxifen to target the spread to the lymph nodes.

But she is experiencing sever effects, especially suicidal thoughts she can't control. She was not at her best as you can imagine with all she is going through at the moment (and other personal issues) but she was never suicidal.

Anyone else experienced anything similar and any advice on how to deal with it?

Many thanks in advance.

  • Hello El-,

Welcome to our forum! I am so sorry to hear your poor aunt is feeling so low. I hope others here will have some helpful suggestions for you as many here will have been through the same treatment and may have experienced its possible side effects.

We do have a page on Tamoxifen side effects and you can read more about it here.

You could also perhaps encourage your aunt to join this forum so she feels less lonely and can talk to others with a similar diagnosis. We have had quite a few people join recently who have endometrial cancer. You can maybe point her in the direction of this recent thread.

You mentioned she lives in Cyprus. Could you let her know about the Cyprus Anti Cancer Society? It provides support and care for people with cancer at their homes. Information is provided in Greek and English. The website includes local contact telephone numbers.

Perhaps your aunt could get in touch with them? If you yourself are based in the UK and want to talk to our specialist nurses, you can reach them on this free number 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

I am not sure what kind of emotional support she can get in Cyprus - in the UK, there is Samaritans. So if you yourself live in the UK, perhaps you could get in touch with Samaritans and mention your aunt's suicidal thoughts to them. They may be able to give you some suggestions or point you in the right direction.

I do hope your aunt feels better soon and I will now let our lovely members come and say hi to you and share their own story!

    Best wishes,
