Will we get any help?

My father was diagnosed with stage four lung and liver cancer last week.   He has moved in to live with me and my family.   He is quickly becoming more frail, but the Macmillan nurses only phone and don't visit in person as they are too stretched.  I feel overwhelmed by the lack of support.   What help do you think I will get later on down the line?

  • Hi wow that's a tough number.  Not only looking after your family but poor dad and his illness.  You must ask his doctor for help - even if it's only the district nurse to come by. The doctor can organise carer's to come and dress and bath dad.

In meantime we are thinking of you and you all

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum though sorry to see reason behind your being here. During my husband's journey with cancer we also encountered  a few problems with MacMillan not being in a position to visit and so switched to our local community (district) nurses, arranged through the GP so I would agree with Steve that the GP should be the first port of all.  You should not have to cope alone and social services (depending on your area) can arrange equipment aids/care assistance but you may have to 'push for it' sadly. There are often local voluntary support centres (for sufferers and family) based at local clinics/hospitals so a good chat with your Dad'sGP could lead to referral.  Hope you, your family and your Dad get the assistance you deserve. • Hi Guardiangirl,

So sorry to hear your sad news.

I think you will have to tell the Macmillan nurses exactly how things are. Dont hold back how you are coping, or not coping. This is a very demanding situation for you  so let people know that you need help. Now is the time to be demanding. If you are out steam and get ill they will have to step in, so dont let it get that far.

Call the doctors and go see them to find out what help you can get now. Dont wait untill youre desperate.    good luck
