Hello from a lost soul

Hi!  My mum's just been diagnosed (last week) with terminal cancer and I'm completely heartbroken.  But I'm also really confused.  We still don't know where it started but know that it's in her lungs, liver and pancreas.  We also don't know yet whether it's small cell or non-small cell as the biopsy isn't until next Friday.  It's quite clear she's not going to survive this but when do we find out how long she's got, what to expect etc?  She's gone downhill so quickly.  Two weeks ago we were shopping, having lunch and laughing and joking but now she's asleep pretty much constantly.  Is this normal?  Google suggests this means she's in her final days.  Any advice or thoughts would be really welcome.  I'm not ready to lose her but want to know what to expect.  Thankyou  xx

  • Dont rely on google for such important answers. You need to ask a healthcare professional perhaps the oncologist or her GP. They will talk quite frankly with both of you if you just ask. No one knows how long a person will survive, but you can get an approximate idea. It is completely normal to be very tired with cancer and sleep a lot. Your mum is very ill and her body is using all her energy to fight it, plus the cancer uses up a lot of energy multiplying itself. At the hospital there are support services who can help you in practical ways and answer your questions and give you moral support. Give the hospital a call and they will tell you what is available in your area. I wish you and your mum all the best in the difficult times ahead.

  • Hi Looloo,

So sorry your mum is so poorly. Youve both had a huge shock and your minds need time to process this. its so frightening. we are all scared stiff when waiting to find out the details. Perhaps your mum is just sleeping because of the shock. Speak to the nurse assigned to your mum and see if she can offer you any help and advice.

    Wishing you both well
