My mum who is 95 years of age and resides in a Care Home was recently diagnosed with myeloma (bone) cancer. I had a discussion with the haematology consultant who explained that chemotherapy tablets could be administered to control the cancer to some extent, this treatment was dependant on her age and health.
The consultant spoke to my mother (not informing her of her medical condition) and concluded that because she was so happy and had no signs of pain and symptoms, she advised against this treatment because it would more or less have an immediate effect on mum's happy outlook of life. Because my mum suffers with mild dementia and anxiety problems any news of cancer would probably finish her off.
I am now in the awful position because I am mum's power of attorney what to do? Should I question if this treatment should be given? Because of her age is treatment the correct thing to do or not?
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.
