How can I help out?

My Mum is coming home from hospital tomorrow. She has advanced bowel cancer and wants to be at home when the time comes. My sister has taken on the role of caring for my Mum as she doesn't work but is a qualified nurse. I want to help, but I work full time and live a distance away from my Mum.

I don't know what I can do. I feel really helpless at the moment.

  • Diginyxx = hi - sorry to hear about Mum. It must be very difficult to live away from her with all this going on! Welcome here and I am sure just how vital a difference you can make.

Firstly you will have to support your sister and Mum = by being there for her. The whole thing is very tiring and they both will need to let off steam -

In this way your role is even heavier = and you can rely on people here supporting and helping you. It maybe be best to inform your manager at work - so if you need to take time off suddenly = they will understand.

We will be thinking of you today

    Stay intouch

  • Hi Diginy,

Sorry to read that your mother has deteriated but pleased that between you and your sister she will be able to spend her last few days at home, rather than in the hospital. I do understand how you feel, living some distance away and working as well means it is not easy but Steve has given good advice. All you can do is what you can and I feel sure whatever it is it will be appreciated both by your mother and your sister. We can only do what we can and that does make us feel helpless as I know from past experiance.

Take care of yourself too best wishes, Brian.
