Continuing the journey

Hi All

Decided to drop the 'month' from the title of this thread as time moves so quickly and the date becomes irrevelant so quickly.

Hubby and I both feeling pretty drained today but not because of his illness. However it is something that has made both us further stressed and 'outside our control'.  Prepare yourselves for a rant or look away now.

Having put in a long work day yesterday (both of us). I switched on my mobile on leaving work to find a message from the social worker for Mum (regular readers of my thread will know what we have been going through recently).  The upshott of this message was that the Social Services panel have decided that they can offer Mum a place at a sheltered housing complex but not the most local one. The call was to advise me of the panel's decision and to tell me that a visit will be arranged this week, preferably by Wednesday, for Mum to be taken to visit the flat and be told about the package of care and how it will work. They require a decision from Mrs K (this is how my mother is addressed in the follow up e-mail!!) by Friday otherwise the placement will be offered to another service provider!  Unfortunately this means Mum has little choice but to move further away (closest sheltered housing has no vacancy and they are  not willing to help fund where she has spent the last 9 months 'settling in').  The guilt I feel at being unable to cope with this is overwhelming, my hubby is very supportive and angry in equal parts and I am dreading the days ahead.  I am unable to take leave and my negative feelings towards her social worker would not work in Mum's favour as she needs to go on the visit with an open mind and the care home staff state she is quite able to make her own mind up.  If she agrees I will be unable to visit as regularly (my problem not theirs of course) but apparently the social worker will accompany her and I have asked to be kept informed.

Even typing this is making me sad/angry/frustrated and emotionally/physically drained.  I was due to visit Mum today but this is on hold until I have spoken to the care home this morning. Hubby says I should leave it till later in the week when we know what is going on and I suspect he is right (bearing in mind my physical upset involves many 'loo' visits (enough said!!)).

Sorry for all the negativity but just needed to get it out and try and get  myself together before I start on the phone calls.

Hope everyone has a good day.  Regards Julesxx

  • Morning Jules,

Was just wondering how you got on when you visited your Mum this week, and also how your daughter got on at hospital?  I do hope things are not too stressful for you and that you can try and have a relaxing weekend.

I'm waiting for my eldest to come home, he has spent somewhat of Freshers sleeping on fellow pupils floors after social events - latest was a toga party last night!  I'm off to my counsellor this morning, had originally been thinking I wouldn't need to see her for too much longer but have been so emotional this week so will talk things over with her.

The weather is forecast to be nice this weekend but is looking a bit gloomy at present.  Here's hoping it brightens up and the sun shines on us all.  Take care  Hope x

  • Hi Hope

Hope you visit to the counsellor was helpful and its good for you to be able to talk things through and this should last as long as you need it.

I have just returned from visiting Mum and she was ok though I am sure a little concerned at how long she will be able to stay where she.  She has amazed the staff at how forthright she was when social worker 'interviewed' her and they are left in no doubt as to what she wants. All the care staff came to see me whilst I was visiting to make sure I was okay too - very sweet.  I stayed until she was due to go into lunch and we even managed a bit of a laugh when I showed her latest photos of her great grandson.  He has really enjoyed his first week in Reception and keeps telling his mum that his teacher is the most beautiful one in the school!!

Hubby and I picked him up from school on Friday as my daughter had to return to hospital for a second day of tests and monitoring.  Specialist blood tests with regard to her liver function have been sent off and unless she hears otherwise she returns to clinic next Friday.  The last set of bloods were borderline but all readings for the baby were good.  If the new blood tests show certain 'rises' she may have to be taken in and possibly induced (she is now 37 weeks and would probably welcome is being over and done with!!).  Anyway so far so good.  I have an overnight bag ready and waiting and she has several friends on standby to get her to the hospital if her hubby is at work.  Mind you she is still driving herself at present!!

When we met our grandson at school (its only 10mins to his home) he told Grandad that he could meet us there as it was healthier to walk!!!  My hubby's face was a picture as he drove off and I walked the little tyke home!!

Life's stresses seem to come and go but having the forum to offload certainly helped me to see things in perspective this week though I think my mood swings are more due to hormones than current circumstances.

Sounds like your eldest having a great time during Freshers but will no doubt be looking forward to some home cooking.  Have a great weekend with the family and will catch up again soon.  All the best and look after yourself. Jules xx

  • Hi Jules and Brian, Phew, I managed to find you! Your thread title was easy enough to find Jules, but that was because I knew it from before and the section it was posted in. Unfortunately, it took nearly 5 mins of clicking on the blue page numbers to get to your most recent post! I'm hoping that I become more proficient as time goes on, but I have to say, at the moment I'm in agreement with you! It's a long winded way to find my old buddies! I did manage to load my new avatar after 2 attempts though! ;) Hope to keep up with everyone! Love to you both, Jo xx
  • Good evening Jules and everyone!

I have to agree completely that this new set up is very long winded.  Could do with the return of the "click for last post" wotsit.

Anyway just wanted to say hello and that I am pleased to have finally found your thread.  I will add this page to my favourites but as it gets added to I will have to scroll more and more or keep adding it as I suppose we all will.

Yeah! Really have to say that first impressions not good right now.

    Sending best wishes to all.

    Garf. x

  • Hi Jules, Jo and Grf,

Nice to be able to talk to you all again and hope you are all well.

I am in total agreement with you all. This site is not as good as the old one. I know it is early days yet but first impressions are not good.  It takes ages to navigate to the current page and there is no spellchecker. I hope they will will be able to tweak things for I honestly think in its present format we will loose some people. I am all for change if it makes things easier but this is exactly the opposite and is making things much harderl. I hope things will improve but far prefer the old site.

Sorry moderators to moan so soon but am not impessed one little bit.

    Brian.

  • Hi Jo and Garf

So, the new forum is live but I am finding it so frustrating to use at the moment that its not proving too helpful having to spend ages locating up to date post.  At least before when you received a notification the e-mail led you straight to the latest post (I really hate having to trundle through all the pages to find the latest post).  Has lost its 'ease appeal'.

Cannot believe I am moaning already so hope it does not frighten all my buddies away!

Jo - all the very best for the 7th and will try my best to keep tracking you.

Garf - good to see you on my thread again - hope you are coping okay.

Think we are all going to have a bit of patience until we find our feet here but sadly first impressions count and I do not find it as user friendly as before.  Still live is full of stresses which need to be overcome.  Hugs to all and take care of yourselves.

  • Hi Jules,

Have been finding my way round the forum today. We heard over the weekend that Mrs B's sister in law who lived in the west country passed away from cancer. So yet another family member lost to this evil disease. Have not done any woodtirning for the past few days as I now have a floater in both eyes and it is making things difficult to focus on close up work although I can see to drive alright. Mind it would have been too cold to work out in my garage anyway. When shopping today, I topped up my supply of nuts and we also visted W H Smith to get some albums for the grandchildren.

I hope your visit to your mother went well and you were able to talk to her and get a good response. Sorry to hear you had not heard anything from social services and hope you will get a response from them soon. Hope you didnt get cold on your way into work this morning as we had quite a heavy frost here this morning. I hope you and hubby have a great night out tommorow night. Take care, hugs, Brian.

  • Hi Brian

It seems we are all being continually affected by loss to this dreadful disease.  On Sunday our neighbour two doors away passed away (they had not even had time to let people know she had been diagnosed with cancer two weeks back).  Such a shock for the family - she was just a couple of years older than me and our children used to play together.  The friend I lost six months ago would have turned 60 today so a very  thoughtful week all round.  Have replied on your amazing quotes thread too and like you am 'finding my feet'  on this new forum.  You can change the format but the lovely buddies I have made remain true to form in their support  so to any of you that find your way back here, thank you for persevering.  Am hoping to get out tomorrow and our local town centre has a three day continental market so weather permitting will check it out on Saturday (after 6hrs on my feet at work  today I did not fancy 'wandering' around).  Heavy frost here this morning and just -3 when I set off for work brrrr  (makes me glad I invested in a new hat/gloves as waiting around on the station platform was a bit chilly.

Mum continues to be quiet but I spent my usual time bringing her home news and tried to get her to let me ring her sister so she could have a chat but she was having none of it. Hey ho!  Hubby also carrying on with life from his armchair and not following doctors orders regarding exercise but I have to accept he is entitled to do things his own way and that I can only carry on with support where necessary.  He has hospital check in a couple of weeks but says nothing has changed much and current medication is fine. Will see what his next round of blood test show.

Hope you and Mrs B enjoy some peace and relaxation over the weekend.  Take care. Jules x

  • Hi all

Just a quick update to say that my Aunt has been discharged from hospital and rang last night to say how well she feels.  Having had an op, followed by a couple more invasive procedures to have tumour removed (in a delicate area) she has no further treatment required other than fortnightly checks with her consultant to 'manage the wound area'.  Huge relief and she has district nurses twice a day to keep an eye on her (she is not amused at this as says she can manage even if she is only 84) probably for at least a month.  As my daughter has said nothing seems to faze her - an inspiration and so different to my Mum - its a mystery!  I left our conversation on the note that she was going to book her Dial a Ride so she could get her hair done on Tuesday, bless her.

Have a good weekend  everyone. Jules x

  • Hi Jules,

Thanks for the update regarding your Aunt. She sounds a really positive charachter. Our next door neighbour went into hospital last Thursday to have two lumps removed from the top of her head and one from her shoulder. She told me her doctor said to her whatever happens to you your always smileing. She was a bit down the other morning though and hadnt even had any breakfast so I made her some toast (whithout burning it)and a cup of tea and told a few jokes and when I left an hour later she said, Thanks Brian, youve realy cheered me up and made me feel better.

Sorry youve had to forgo your walk this morning. If its any consolation, its been raining pretty heavy here too. Our back lawn is absolutely saturated. Also pleased you liked the quotes.

I may have to see my diabetic nurse as my blood sugar seem to keep going low first thing in the mornings recently. Might change though now I am not out in the garage woodturning. Its Mrs B's birthday on Sunday so will have to go out and get her some nice flowers tommorow. Have got her a card with an owl on it.

Take care and I wish you and hubby a relaxing weekend, Brian

  • Hi Jules,

So glad that there has been good news about your Aunt and it does seem a bit of a mystery how she and your Mum can be so different.  Having said that my sister and I are quite different in some respects but at least we get on well with eachother.

Still struggling to come to terms with this new site and I hope it's not too long before the creases are ironed out.  Good luck at bingo!  Garf X

Sorry to read your news about your Mrs B's sister in law Brian.  This horrible disease never does rest does it?

Definately reccomend you stay away from your cold shed for a while and stay in a nice warm house.  I made that mistake last week and left the comfort of my home for a round of golf in the cold and a non-stop rain shower.  I have never been so pleased to see my house and a warm bath.

    Garf.

  • Hi Garf,

Thanks for your kind words. The trouble with woodturning is that when its cold, you are standing still in one spot, holding cold metal tools plus you get a draught from the spinning timber. Luckily I have got plenty of work done so unless something urgent crops up, will not do any more for a few months and will go back to my story writing.

I have just about come to terms with this new format and am finding it's growing on me but still prefer the old one better if I'm honest. If your golf course is anything like our garden, you will need scuba gear if you want to play today as the water is laying on top of our lawn. Take care Garf and hope you have a relaxing weekend, Brian.

  • Hello Brian have only just managed to log on to the forum however couldnt do it with my usual Susananne or password it said not recognised so im now Sueanne what a frustrating annoying time I felt so lost without my Forum buddies must try looking around for Jules hope you and mrs B are both well Brian will talk again soon    ...Sueanne

  • Hi Sueanne,

The reason you couldnt log in is we have all had to change our passwords. There are still a few problems to be sorted out  with this new site which they are aware of and hope these will all soon be resolved.

    Take care best wishes, Brian.

  • Hi Sueanne

New format has rocked most 'old regulars'.  Took me a few days to 'understand' it enough to locate people. Find easiest way to 'search' for name or thread and also use the 'my activity' button which shows discussions you have followed.  I think you could have retained your old 'sign in details' by resetting your pass word (I went through this process the day the new site went live and found it worked okay (took me a bit of time to get my avatar right but Moderators sorted me out - that's the trouble with being a technophobe!!

How is your daughter doing following her diagnosis? Cannot be easy for her or the family and hope she has good GP support.  Hope little James is thriving (Zack turned one last month and his elder brother will be 6 at the end of November (I am babysitting that day so they can give  him his birthday treat - bowling with a couple of school friends).  Currently we are trying to arrange family meals prior to the build up to Christmas but are fast running out of weekends and am wondering where the time is going!  Hope you are keeping well and the dog walking is  not too windswept. Take care. Jules x
