Continuing the journey

Hi All

Decided to drop the 'month' from the title of this thread as time moves so quickly and the date becomes irrevelant so quickly.

Hubby and I both feeling pretty drained today but not because of his illness. However it is something that has made both us further stressed and 'outside our control'.  Prepare yourselves for a rant or look away now.

Having put in a long work day yesterday (both of us). I switched on my mobile on leaving work to find a message from the social worker for Mum (regular readers of my thread will know what we have been going through recently).  The upshott of this message was that the Social Services panel have decided that they can offer Mum a place at a sheltered housing complex but not the most local one. The call was to advise me of the panel's decision and to tell me that a visit will be arranged this week, preferably by Wednesday, for Mum to be taken to visit the flat and be told about the package of care and how it will work. They require a decision from Mrs K (this is how my mother is addressed in the follow up e-mail!!) by Friday otherwise the placement will be offered to another service provider!  Unfortunately this means Mum has little choice but to move further away (closest sheltered housing has no vacancy and they are  not willing to help fund where she has spent the last 9 months 'settling in').  The guilt I feel at being unable to cope with this is overwhelming, my hubby is very supportive and angry in equal parts and I am dreading the days ahead.  I am unable to take leave and my negative feelings towards her social worker would not work in Mum's favour as she needs to go on the visit with an open mind and the care home staff state she is quite able to make her own mind up.  If she agrees I will be unable to visit as regularly (my problem not theirs of course) but apparently the social worker will accompany her and I have asked to be kept informed.

Even typing this is making me sad/angry/frustrated and emotionally/physically drained.  I was due to visit Mum today but this is on hold until I have spoken to the care home this morning. Hubby says I should leave it till later in the week when we know what is going on and I suspect he is right (bearing in mind my physical upset involves many 'loo' visits (enough said!!)).

Sorry for all the negativity but just needed to get it out and try and get  myself together before I start on the phone calls.

Hope everyone has a good day.  Regards Julesxx

  • Morning Jules,

Was just wondering how you got on when you visited your Mum this week, and also how your daughter got on at hospital?  I do hope things are not too stressful for you and that you can try and have a relaxing weekend.

I'm waiting for my eldest to come home, he has spent somewhat of Freshers sleeping on fellow pupils floors after social events - latest was a toga party last night!  I'm off to my counsellor this morning, had originally been thinking I wouldn't need to see her for too much longer but have been so emotional this week so will talk things over with her.

The weather is forecast to be nice this weekend but is looking a bit gloomy at present.  Here's hoping it brightens up and the sun shines on us all.  Take care  Hope x

  • Hi Hope

Hope you visit to the counsellor was helpful and its good for you to be able to talk things through and this should last as long as you need it.

I have just returned from visiting Mum and she was ok though I am sure a little concerned at how long she will be able to stay where she.  She has amazed the staff at how forthright she was when social worker 'interviewed' her and they are left in no doubt as to what she wants. All the care staff came to see me whilst I was visiting to make sure I was okay too - very sweet.  I stayed until she was due to go into lunch and we even managed a bit of a laugh when I showed her latest photos of her great grandson.  He has really enjoyed his first week in Reception and keeps telling his mum that his teacher is the most beautiful one in the school!!

Hubby and I picked him up from school on Friday as my daughter had to return to hospital for a second day of tests and monitoring.  Specialist blood tests with regard to her liver function have been sent off and unless she hears otherwise she returns to clinic next Friday.  The last set of bloods were borderline but all readings for the baby were good.  If the new blood tests show certain 'rises' she may have to be taken in and possibly induced (she is now 37 weeks and would probably welcome is being over and done with!!).  Anyway so far so good.  I have an overnight bag ready and waiting and she has several friends on standby to get her to the hospital if her hubby is at work.  Mind you she is still driving herself at present!!

When we met our grandson at school (its only 10mins to his home) he told Grandad that he could meet us there as it was healthier to walk!!!  My hubby's face was a picture as he drove off and I walked the little tyke home!!

Life's stresses seem to come and go but having the forum to offload certainly helped me to see things in perspective this week though I think my mood swings are more due to hormones than current circumstances.

Sounds like your eldest having a great time during Freshers but will no doubt be looking forward to some home cooking.  Have a great weekend with the family and will catch up again soon.  All the best and look after yourself. Jules xx

  • Hi Jo

Lovely for you to be 'watching' and 'waiting' and no problem with doubling up at all. Just nice to know our virtual buddies are out there!.  The windy weather is here and its almost time to put on the fire (we do not have central heating so are quite hardy!!). Mind you my hubby just came in from a day fishing with our son (he did not catch anything though our son managed a carp and his friend a bream).  It was lovely that my hubby could get out of the house and enjoy some 'boys' time but think he is still waiting to thaw out as he has eaten his dinner in double layers!!  He is now popping his evening drug cocktail so suspect he may be asleep soon (usually dozes whilst  tablets taking affect, mind you he is watching his favourite sci-fi programmes at the moment so may be not_.

How are you doing yourself?  Hope you can have a nice relaxing weekend ahead. Chat again soon.Jules x

  • Hi Meerkat,

Lovely to hear from you, how are you doing now?  Hope you have been able to enjoy some pampering while you are recuperating!  Hope x

Jules, wishing you a peaceful nights sleep - unless of course you get the "baby call".  Hope x

  • Morning Jules,

Just wondering how things are?  I take it no baby news yet?  You must be in tender hooks now.  Hope x

  • Morning Hope

Yep we are all just ploddig along. Hubby seems to be more tired of late but this is probably more due to inactivity as he still just sits around all day despite being told that there is no reason he cannot go for walks.  With worklife being over he just shows no interest but maybe one day he will adjust and I will get a smile again.  Work has  been very busy as we continue to get ready for Christmas but as today is my day off I took our grandson to school as my daughter had upset stomach and understandably not sleeping too well now.  We are going to get him from school later and have him at ours for dinner to give her a rest!  Other than that all is well.  Hope you keeping okay and that your eldest enjoyed his weekend at home. Take care Jules xx

  • Hi Jules,

Hope you are well and that daughter of yours is doing okay.

I am sure she is feeling like having this baby now as she must be due.

How is your grandson doing with school and looking forward to the baby still?

I am sure your daughter will appreciate the time and space you are giving her today. So nice to be able to help them, and feel useful ourselves.

I bet your grandson looks foward to coming to grans for tea.

Agghh, you've mentioned that Christmas word, I wonder when one gets the time to organise Christmas. He ho.

Well I had better get off and do some more work.
    Take care

    Annabel. xx

  • HI to all my virtual friends

Just wanted to share our news.  We became grandparents for the second time at 9.32 this morning to Zack, a 8.14oz  bouncing boy!  All the family doing well and my daughter rang about an hour ago  as our eldest grandson wanted to tell us all about  being a big brother as his Dad had picked him up from school to go visit the new edition.  All well and happy and glad the wait is over. Jules xx

  • Hi Jules,

    "Congratulations".

I bet you and your husband are over the moon with this, and I can see nanny wanting to give Zack a cuddle as soon as possible.  You all must be very glad the wait is over Thank you for sharing your good news with all of your virtual friends on here. Will talk again soon.

Best wishes to you and all your family, Brian

  • Hi Annabel

As you can see from above post the waiting is over. Everyone very happy (but tired).  we got the call at 6 a.m. and our daughter went into hospital around 7 so all in all nice and quick.  She rang a while ago and just waiting to be seen by doctor and then should be allowed home later this afternoon.  They say they can go back tomorrow for baby's paediatric check but all looks good.  Our grandson was so excited on the phone telling me all about being a big brother and my daughter says he is wide eyed and being very good and cant wait to go to school and tell everyone he has a new brother to look after.

Thankfully he settled into school very well and is now full time, though only a couple of weeks till half term (I am on leave from next Wednesday when my son in law goes back to work so she can have an extra pair of hands when and if she likes for a while). Timing was great as I don't work Tuesdays!!  Think being with new baby brother has superceded tea at Grannys so off the hook for cooking twice

Hubby has found his 'smile' again today  and hopefully it can take his mind of his next check up for a bit (planned 29th OCT).

Am lucky re Christmas this year as its at my sister in laws so just need to turn up and the whole family are there for 3 days and we can all muck in!!  As to the shopping thankfully we have small family and only just token gifts for adults (grandkids get a bit more).  We have our grandsons 5th birthday at end of November so will be focussing on that next!!.

Hope you and the family are all keeping well.  Chat again soon.Jules xx

  • Thanks Brian,

All chuffed to bits and once they are settled back at home and are ready for visitors we will pop in.  No rush as would rather my daughter rests when possible and plenty of time to play catch up. Have a feeling it will be the 'older brother' who will get my attention first as he is full of it all and very excited to tell everyone about it.  Jules xx

  •        HUGE CONGRATULATIONS!!!

What fantastic news, Jules! So glad your daughter and baby Zack are well. What a big baby! Lovely name too.

It's great that your eldest grandson is so excited and enthusiastic about his new baby brother. I loved it when the children in school wanted to do 'Show and Tell' about their new siblings! (Quite a regular occurrence in a primary school!)

Enjoy lots of cuddles with both your grandsons and we look forward to hearing lots of updates over the weeks about how everyone is doing.

Take care, hugs to you all, Jo xxx

  • Congratulations & welcome to the world Zack!  Oh I bet you are so pleased and glad to hear it has put a smile back on hubby's face.  Bet your grandson is proud to have a baby brother too.  I expect you may be rather busy over the weekend, but look forward to hearing all about baby when you get a chance. Hope x

  • Thanks so much Jo.  As you can imagine it has lifted everyone's spirits.  Just as well she did not hang on to him any longer. He was 14oz bigger than his brother!!!!  According to the midwife he was one in a million (born with waters intact!!).

Hope you are doing okay and will chat again soon.  I see a spell of nappy shopping ahead!!!  Take care Jules xx

  • Thanks Hope,  I am back to work tomorrow (have already rung them today to arrange leave from the 23rd (when son in law has to return to work). It will mean I can do the housework for my daughter and school runs if necessary (we are so lucky that they are only 20mins walk away!!).  My son and his girlfriend have half term week as holiday and the plan is to treat 'big brother' to a day out (providing he wants to go,of course).  Suspect all will be bedlam for a bit but if my daughter is anything like I was she will just fit Zack's routine around his older brother - she can't wait to show him off to the school Mums - there will be a new addition to the morning coffee club!!

Hope you are doing okay - not doubt work keeping you busy.  chat again soon.  Jules xx

  • Well CONGRATULATIONS GRANDMA. !!!!!

Wishing all your family the best of happy times and lots of celebratory moments.

So glad to hear all went well . So happy for you all.

    Best wishes

  • Thanks Annabel

Just had a call to say daughter being kept in overnight due to heavy blood loss.  Under observation but in good spirits.  Son in law just bought our grandson home for later than usual bedtime but will go back up hospital after he has taken him to school in the morning.  Hopefully  they will be allowed home tomorrow if all settles down ok.  Chat again soon. Jules xx

  • Morning Jules,

I know you'll be at work now, hope you manage to book your leave okay.

I know when we first started to discuss our pregnant daughters you will have told me what you are called but being me I have forgotton

so what is it, Grandma, granny, Nan, etc. Let an old person know will you,LOL.

    Annabel. xx

  • Hi Annabel

I am a granny but have just replied to Garf on the amazing quotes thread about same thing.  My grandson has called me Gingy since he was little and it has stuck- so sort of have a special pet name.

Just got back from visiting the new family at the hospital.  Unfortunately my daughter had to have emergency surgery for blood clots this afternoon and is now having blood transfusions so will be in hospital a little longer.  All a bit emotional for her as the new baby was feeding really well but has had to be switched to the bottle because of the drugs my daughter has to take  Having said that the little one is happy as long as someone is giving him food and she is flat on her back full of tubes at present so it was like pass the parcel as we all took our turn with the customary cuddle.  Son in law in his element and doing a great job looking after both of them during the day. My daughter is being 'specialled' tonight so that she can sleep of the effects of today and the baby has its own dedicated nightnurse.  God bless the NHS.

Have our first photos so can take them into work tomorrow.  I am on holiday from next Wednesday (when my son in law goes back to work) and do not go back for 2 weeks so can help out during the half-term week too. Hubby has been doing the afternoon school run and all in all we are managing quite well (feel a bit shell-shocked at the turn of events, especially as she had a really good labour/delivery.

Still they are in the best place for now and we are keeping our grandson busy tomorrow so that his Mum can have a complete day of rest.

Will chat again soon.  Hope all is well with you?

    Jules xx

  • Hi jules,

Lovely to hear from you. What a strange coincidence that both our girls had a post partum bleed and transfusions after a good birth.!!

It's funny how we all react when things don't go quite to plan, but with child birth and children thats often the way isn't it? As for feeding the baby have they not given her a breast milk extracting machine.? She could still feed the baby later . Emotionally this would be a big bonding action for her and baby which is a positive thing.

Glad to see you got the time off. Hope you sleep well tonight so you have the energy for the next few days/ weeks.

    speak again soon

    Annabel.xx

  • Hi Annabel

Yes quite the coincidence and must say I drew strength from knowing how well your daughter recovered.  Unfortunately my daughter not allowed to express (she already had the equipment herself as used if with first baby for a while) as she on heavy duty drugs which would pass through and not be good for baby.  Far better that she gets well (they had to do quite a repair job on her insides and the bad tear aswell as dealing with the blood clots).  She was on oxygen when we got to the hospital but they were able to remove this just before we left.  Hopefully following the transfusion and a good night's rest she will feel stronger.  She said that the last 12 hrs had been a bit of a blur but baby was quite happy laying next to her on the bed. She more fed up with being prodded and poked (and has a needle phobia).  Our grandson took it all in his stride but not impressed at the baby's cry (covers his ears) but very much hands on helping (so gentle).  Was a bit bemused when helping Daddy to change the nappy - wondered why the baby had a 'klippit' for a tummy button.

Well off to work shortly and then we will have our eldest grandson after school (he not visiting hospital today) and Dad will pick him up on his way home (well thats the plan at the moment!!).

As to sleeping, managed 4 good hours before tossing and turning began so not bad at all.

Have a good day.  Jules xx

  • Hi Jules,

Just to say I hope your daughter is feeling better, and hope new baby continues to do well.  I laughed at your grandson not being impressed by baby's cry  - when I brought my youngest home, eldest decided to help with bathtime, as I took baby's clothes off he naturally screamed and then eldest started crying and saying "put his clothes on"!  It's one of those little things I'll always remember.  Have a good day.  Hope x
