Just new and needing answers - husband needs chemo before he can have surgery. Does anyone have any advice on how to prepare and what to expect afterwards?

my husband has just been diagnosed with pleomorphic carcinoma in his abdomen. The initial plan was to have surgery to remove it. We’ve found out today that it is too aggressive and that he needs to have chemotherapy first. If the cancer responds to the chemo then he can have surgery. We are now waiting for a call from the oncologists to arrange an appointment. We are based near Durham so likely all treatment will be at the local hospital. I suppose I’m kind of just looking for someone to say it’s going to be ok. Or at least tell me how to prepare for chemotherapy and the after effects.

My dad died of cancer and this just feels different

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, Mrsh77.

I’m sorry that you are having to face such scary and overwhelming news. It is entirely understandable that you feel so frightened right now, and it makes complete sense that this experience feels so different from what you went through with your dad. Facing a new diagnosis brings up so many complex emotion and it is okay to feel overwhelmed by how different this path feels.

As many here can tell you, the waiting phase while you anticipate that call from the oncology team is often the hardest part. While you wait, please know that you do not have to carry this heavy weight all by yourself. Our community members understand that agonising wait completely, and I hope they will be along very soon to offer their support and share how they coped during these exact moments.

If it helps you feel a bit more grounded right now, you might find it comforting to read through our community discussions on starting chemotherapy, where other people have shared how they navigated those first few weeks and looked after themselves. Since you are near Durham, you can also look into a local service called Joining the Dots County Durham. They provide free, practical support for local families, helping with everything from a listening ear to organising transport for appointments at the hospital.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that our wonderful team of cancer nurses is also right here for you. If you want to talk through how you are feeling or if you just need a safe space to vent, you can ring them for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm.

Last but not least, please remember that we are all right here with you whenever you need to talk.

    Warm wishes,
