Conflicting information

Hi all,

First time posting on here, so hopefully I'm not over sharing in this post, but I'm concerned over conflicting information that has been given by the consultant, and then the registrar regarding my dad's cancer diagnosis and treatment. Earlier this year he was diagnosed with prostate cancer that has infiltrated his pelvis. Obviously we've been told that it's incurable (not great), but can be treated with a combination of chemotherapy and hormone therapy, followed by radiotherapy. Before he started his treatment we had a consultation with his oncologist who laid out all the treatment options, the risks involved with them, and changes to my dad's lifestyle that he'd need to make in order to make the treatment as manageable as possible. This included getting more exercise (my dad isn't the most energetic at the best of times), eat a balanced diet (again he likes his biscuits, bacon and trans-fats!), to cut down on his alcohol consumption (likes a whisky or two/three) and to cut down on mixing indoors when there are lots of people (in his spare time he's a swimming referee so he does a lot of mixing with people). All of this was written up in his patient notes.

When he started his treatment, we had a follow on consultation, this time with a registrar, because the oncologist wasn't available. The registrar gave a cursory glance over his notes and basically said the opposite of what the consultant oncologist had said. He can go back to mixing with groups indoors, he can eat what he wants and he can drink.... Now, alot of this has been given to me by my parents who aren't the most reliable when it comes to relaying information, but given that the registrar has said this, my dad has now gone wild with overeating on lots of unhealthy foods, biscuits, cake, fry up, you name it. He doesn't do any exercise and he's drinking (not heavily like). Add to that he's now become incredibly irritable which is apparently associated with his low testosterone (due to the hormone therapy), but a quick Google would suggest it could also be due to his rubbish diet, lack of exercise and not sleeping very well.

My dad is nearing 70 so I understand he isn't exactly sprightly, and that he needs to have his "treats", but should I be concerned about the completely opposing advice from the oncologist and the registrar? To me the logic is that he follow the advice of the oncologist, since they've got oversight of his treatment overall. The registrar, whilst qualified, isn't the lead for my dad's treatment. Has anyone had a similar experience as this, or any suggestions?

Cheers!
