Discharge Enquiry: they are going to discharge my husband from hospital at the end of the week - what support will be available at home?

My husband with advanced bowel cancer and pneumonia has been in hospital almost 3 weeks now.  He told me this morning that the doctor has said as the chest infection (pneumonia)  isnt responding to antibiotics and as his cancer has spread further into his lungs and liver they are going to discharge him home at the end of the week.We are pleased he is coming home where we can spoil him, make him more comfortable and where he can get a better sleep and better food.  However, it would help me to understand what it is going to be like - whether anyone else has gone through this.  I presume my husband will have regular visits from his GP and district nurse.  I am finding it so hard to come to terms with.  It is all so very stressful.

  • Hi Auntiesand,

3 weeks is a long time for your poor husband to have been in hospital and I am so sorry to hear that the doctor told you his chest infection isn't responding to antibiotics and the cancer has spread further into his lungs and liver. The news that the antibiotics are not working  must be really hard for you and those close to him to bear but after spending so long in hospital I can imagine you are pleased to see him come home where you are able as you say to spoil him and make him more comfortable. Better quality of sleep and better quality of food will hopefully make a difference.

I hope that you will hear from others here who've been through something similar as it's always good to hear from other people's experiences but you are right that your husband will not be left alone and should be having regular home visits after he is discharged and comes home. I am sure that they will tell you just before your husband leaves the hospital what to expect and don't hesitate to ask them questions about how regular for example these visits might be and what support is available to you as you shouldn't have to do everything alone at home. There is useful information on our website on support at home including community or district nurse support, community specialist palliative care nurses and Marie Curie nurses. Your GP will also be made aware that your husband has been discharged and is also a good point of contact if you have any questions so don't hesitate to get in touch with the GP at any point after he comes home.

We also have a nurse helpline you are very welcome to ring on 0808 800 4040 - it is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. It may help to talk things through with them and I am sure they will be able to guide you further. It must be so hard for you at the moment and we are all here for you during this really stressful time.

What you are going through at the moment is so hard and many members of our community have sadly been in a similar place before and I would like to invite them to pop by and share their own story with you.

We're thinking of you and your husband during this difficult time and I hope that he will find it more comfortable and peaceful being back at home after such a long hospital stay.

    Best wishes,
