Systemic Mastocytosis with an associated haematological neoplasm

I’ve not been here for a very long time but things have changed dramatically.

My partner who was diagnosed with CMML in spring 2024, didn’t respond to the Azacitidine for 7 months, started getting increased platelet counts increasing to normal levels after a further 3 or 4 months, these remain normal throughout the remainder of 2025. Unfortunately his platelet count started dropping earlier this year and the haematologist requested another bone marrow biopsy. They have said that they couldn’t see any CMML cells but found Mast Cells further investigation has now confirmed a diagnosis of the aforementioned disease, it would appear that the CMML has mutated.

This diagnosis is as rare as hens teeth! And they have never treated it before. I have attempted to research it myself but theres very little on the subject available online and what there is isn’t great reading and I’m feeling frightened for him.

  • Hello 33Archersmate,

Welcome back to Cancer Chat though I'm sorry to learn about your partner's recent diagnosis. I can imagine you would be worried for him. Seeing a loved one go through complications can often leave you feeling helpless, but I'm sure your presence and support is so valuable to your partner. We have guidance for family, friends and carers including advice on looking after yourself, which you can refer to at anytime.

There is some information on the NHS website about Mastocytosis, but as you say it's quite rare. If you'd have any specific medical queries, I'd suggest you speak to one of our cancer nurses to talk thing through, you can have a free and confidential talk via our nurse helpline. The number is 0808 800 4040 and lines open 9 to 5 Monday to Friday. This forum is also here for you whenever you need it.

    Best wishes to you both,
