Father in law had stage 4 lung cancer, now brain mets have developed

My FIL was diagnosed with Lung Cancer last January. He had chemotherapy , radiotherapy and immunotherapy . He was really unwell whilst undergoing treatment and after each scan after the treatment , there has been no improvement In his cancer instead it has progressed to his brain now . He has around 5/6 lesions on his brain and is on the Pallative care team now to manage his life and help him eat and do things for as long as he can.
my question is how long can he go on for without treatment , he is only taking 8mg steroids dexamathasone to manage his symptoms and has no treatment in place as they have said he cannot have further treatment due to his weakness and condition

  • Hello Aashi999,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to hear about your father-in-law and I hope that he is as comfortable as possible. It's very difficult to know exactly how long someone might have left, so it might help to talk to his palliative care team first. They'd be best to help give you some idea. We also have some information and advice around Palliative Care, which I hope might be useful and if you'd like to speak to one of our cancer nurses, you can call them for free on 0808 800 4040. Lines are open from 9 to 5 Monday to Friday.

All the best to you and the family,

    Moderator Anastasia
