The side effects of my mum's medication are causing her to be very angry

Hello,

My mum is undergoing treatment for breast cancer. She has to take medications, but one of the side effects is that they make her extremely angry. For me and my younger sibling, living with her has become very difficult as our house is full of rage, arguments and sadness. We have spoken to her about it, and she is also aware of the way the medications make her act, but she obviously can't stop taking them. She isn't a bad person or anything like that, it's the medications making her that way, and she often says hurtful things, but she doesn't mean them. What do I do and how do I deal with it? Also, is this a situation anyone else has gone through or is going through at the moment? Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Hello ab2025,

not so sure its the medication or the fears associated with her assessment of her current condition and the unknowns of what the future holds. A major shock like this can lead to people to regard the everyday trivial in comparison to the upheaval overtaking their mind. This can so easily lead to the attitude you describe, and coming to terms with that can be overwhelming. Those around her with well meaning attempts to retain the ordinary  can be construed as pointless interference in the sea of turmoil taken root in the mind.

Understanding that the person you know and love is still there, but the demons she unwillingly carries are currently disguising her true identity----its time she will need to come to terms with the current all controlling scenario she is desperately trying to work out,

Bear with her and give her the space to return to the firmer ground of the foundations that formed her previous life, it will happen, the anger will burn out and be replaced by the acceptance, just have the patience for this to occur difficult though it may be,
