Worried how we are going to cope - partner has just been diagnosed with throat cancer

My partner has just been diagnosed with early stage throat cancer, I have fibromyalgia myself and I am so worried how we are going to cope financially and mentally, ive been unemployed for almost 2 years now he is on sick leave.

When told he had cancer everything was a whirlwind of information, appointment after appointment, but yesterday it really hit home and we both felt out of our depth, we went to the cancer unit for a fitting of his mesh mask for his radiotherapy, it all felt very daunting, scary, nothing explained, just told to wait in a waiting room, I broke down, no one asked, are you ok? can we help? I eventually pulled myself together for my partners sake, but it would of been nice to have a nurse or someone by our side to even stay for 10 minutes to say this is what's going to happen....we are with you ...a hold of a hand for reassurance, anyone else experience this?

  • Hello Lolly

It is a very scary time for you both. Staff are often too busy / short-staffed to be able to provide pastoral care. But practical care is excellent. The Macmillan nurses at the hospital are a good point of contact for both care and advice on help with finance benefits available. Or call the nurses here. Wishing you both the strength to get through.
