Travelling with Cancer and Insurance

Good morning, my mum has just been given a terminal diagnosis.  I want to taker her to Spain for a week's holiday before she starts more chemotherapy to help slow down her disease, does anyone know about travel insurance or can recommend a travel insurance company I can approach to get some cover for her.  I understand that she may need to get a letter from her doctor saying that she is fit to travel? Thank you.

  • Hi Diane

What a lovely thing to plan for your mum . Try these for insurance

If your mum has a terminal dignosis of less than 6 months insurance companies will not insure. You can still travel at your own risk and use GHIC card for an absolute emergency,  or take a break in UK.

  • Hi Ed, Thank you for your response.  They have not given her a prognosis of what time she has left, she only found out yesterday but we were aware that it was coming.  She is well at the moment so we think we are just going to chance it. She has a GHIC, we are going out to holiday home in Spain so its not like we are taking any risks anywhere.  Thanks again. Diane

  • Hi Diane,

I’m sorry to read your news.
Has anyone in authority actually used the exact words “terminal diagnosis”?
Most insurance companies will ask this question and your answer will make a huge difference to the cover offered and the premium charged.
If they’ve used the words incurable or untreatable or limited prognosis, you can in all honesty tick the box no in response.
This may seem pedantic but terminal isn’t often used before a firm prognosis has been given.

    Good luck
