Small cell pancreas cancer - General prognosis seems to be poor. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Can my dad beat this?

Hi all,

My dad has recently been diagnosed with small cell pancreas cancer. They don't know whether its spread to the lymph nodes  but it hasn't spread to any other organs yet..but at the last scan in feb showed it was under 2cms. I know this type of cancer is really really aggressive and my dad is very positive and currently a little bit in denial. He will start chemo in 2 weeks and we are trying to be optimistic. When i look at the prognosis, it is poor and they say that it can be months only in some cases.Does anyone have any experience in a similar situation and what the outlook might be for him. Can he beat this, is there a chance he might be ok if the chemo is successful? i cant seem to find any information . I want to be realistic and want to know what we are facing, so we can prepare ourselves and help dad face it too.

Thanks for any guidance or advice

  • Hello Chekov48

I'm sorry to hear that your Dad has recently been diagnosed with small cell pancreas cancer. This is understandably a difficult time for you both, and natural that you have some questions and concerns about what the future holds for your Dad.

It's good to hear that your Dad is trying to maintain a positive mindset. I know that many of our community members who have been through treatment will agree that keeping a positive approach really does help, particularly on days when it feels tough going.

In terms of prognosis, his treatment team will be best placed to talk with you about those questions you have. If your Dad doesn't want to know or be part of those discusssions then you can always ask him if he will give his permission for the specialists to talk with you. Alternativley if you'd like to talk things through with one of our team of nurses, you're most welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Chekov48 and let us know how you're all doing. We're here to offer any support that we can.
