Dad recently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer - I'm really struggling emotionally with this diagnosis. Can anyone help?

Hi,

I'm new to this page.

My Dad has been recently diagnosed with secondary cancer - now its lung cancer stage 4. I'm really struggling emotionally. The impact of the diagnosis has affected me greatly. He is nearly 78. He has to have PET scan soon and has seen his consultant. My dad is a very private person and keeps his feeling in and doesn't express how he is really feeling.

My mum said she is keeping every day as normal as possible for my Dad. I find it difficult to express to my mum how I'm feeling. My gp has suggested  for me to attend counselling.

Any advise would be really appreciated

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Josh although I'm sorry to hear about your dad's recent diagnosis of secondary cancer. This must be a very difficult time for you and your parents.

To be struggling emotionally after finding this out is completely understandable Josh, so do be kind to yourself at this time and take as much time as you need to process this news. Looking after yourself and managing your emotions can be very challenging when supporting a loved one with cancer but it's good you spoke to your GP about this. You can find out more about cancer and counselling on our website but there are also cancer charities such as Maggie's that offer free expert care and support to anyone affected by cancer either online or in one of their centres across the UK, so do get in touch with them when you can.

So many of our members know how difficult and upsetting this time can be, so you are not alone, and hopefully some of them will stop by soon to share their experiences and advice.

We have a team of very understanding and insightful cancer nurses that you can talk to as well on 0808 800 4040. Although their phone lines will be closed over the bank holiday weekend, they will be resuming their normal weekday hours of 9a.m - 5p.m from Tuesday onwards.

Our forum is a safe space to talk about anything that is on your mind Josh, so do keep posting if you find it helps and remember that we will be always be here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
