Misdiagnosis? Dad has pancreatic cancer and was given 6 - 9 months but he is healthier than ever and has even gained weight. How is this possible?

Hi, how common is it to be misdiagnosed? My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July 2025 with a prognosis of 6-9 months.

However, he is healthier than ever with a healthy appetite and is gaining weight. How is this possible unless he was wrongly diagnosed in the first instance?

  • Hello JoBudge,

I am not sure myself whether it is common to be misdiagnosed with pancreatic cancer  but it must indeed be a pleasant surprise to see your dad looking so healthy when he was given a prognosis of 6-9 months. That is certainly good news and it must be so nice to see him having a healthy appetite and gaining weight. I can completely understand why you are wondering why this is happening and perhaps you could consider getting a second opinion just to have absolute certainty about the diagnosis.

It might be worth asking questions to the specialists and medical experts who will I am sure be able to explain why your dad is looking so healthy at the moment - you definitely need those answers and to understand exactly what is going on.

Our cancer nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a call and talk things through with them as they may have further thoughts or guidance.

I hope that you can get all the answers you need very soon and also that your dad continues to do so well. Keep us updated if you don't mind and get a chance as we'll be interested to know what you find out.

    Best wishes,
