Help please

My husband has been recently diagnosed with muscle invasive bladder cancer. We have been told for 6 months that this was nothing to worry about as it was a catheter reaction. How did this go so wrong. Undergoing 4 cycles of chemo in preparation  for a full bladder removal. I’m devastated and bsuicidal. How can I help him through this x

  • A very warm welcome to the forum although I'm very sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis and how this is making you feel.

Dealing with a cancer diagnosis can sometimes be just as tough for those doing the caring as it is for the person diagnosed and hearing the words cancer after being told for 6 months that this was nothing to worry about will make you feel a whole host of emotions, some of which can be quite overwhelming, especially if suicidal thoughts start to appear, but you've been very brave by sharing this with us and I hope some of our members who have contended with similar thoughts and emotions will stop by soon to offer their support and advice.

The mental health charity Mind have some really useful information on understanding suicidal thoughts and tips for coping with suicidal thoughts but if you find yourself struggling at any point, the Samaritans are just a phone call away on 116 123 or SHOUT can be contacted through their text messaging service on 85258. Both of these charities are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and will be there to listen and provide support when you need it most.

I hope this information we have for family, friends and caregivers that has advice on supporting someone with cancer and taking care of yourself will be useful as well but if you want to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They will do all they can to support you and answer any other questions you may have about your husband's bladder cancer treatment at this time.

Supporting someone with cancer can be very difficult, but we are here for you and will be by your side on every step of this journey.

    Kind regards,
