Bowel cancer & dementia - what is the prognosis?

what’s the prognosis for an 83 year old with stage 2 2 bowel cancer ( disngosed Sep 2025) and also stage 5/6 dementia? We have been told that treatment is not an option and that symptoms will be treated as and when they occur.

Would  love to hear from anyone else in the same situation.

Thank you .

  • Hello Jeetha

I'm so sorry to hear that someone you care for has been diagnosed with stage 2 bowel cancer, as well as living with dementia. It must have been really difficult to hear that news particulary as the specialists have said that treatment is not an option.

We have some information about bowel cancer on our website that may be helpful for you. You might also find it useful to read through the information on the Dementia UK website.

It's really difficult for anyone here to say how things will progress but if you'd like to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support, you're welcome to call them. I know they will be happy to listen. They're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that this helps a little. Do keep in touch if you need further support or have questions.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi, my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer with a prognosis of 6-9 months life expectancy. He too has dementia and this has made the situation doubly difficult, as we have to have the same conversation about cancer over and over as he keeps forgetting he has it.

My sisters and I are broken with it all, our mum is also in a dementia unit we are all mentally exhausted, but you keep going because you have to, if I stop to think I think about everything I'd crack up :( I do totally understand how you're feeling.

  • Hi JoBudge thanks for sharing . I guess it’s the sense of not knowing timescales which is unsettling for the family and having this false sense of security about how much time we have with him.

That said the dementia is progressing and more of an issue than the cancer at the moment. He must at stage6.

We just have to take things on a day by day basis as no doubt you are .

  • Absolutely, it's a horrible situation to be in
