My mother has T4 Lung Cancer. I'm caring for her at home but it's hard. Love her so much but need some advice

Hi iv just bn told my mum has Lung Cancer T4 I'm really struggling at the moment and feel like I cant breathe.

I've had nearly a month in & out of hospital been awful .She is adamant she is not going back in so I'm caring for her at her home .She refused carers in but iv said i need them to help me so come morn & teatime .Iv bn staying overnight for weeks but i can not sleep at all with the oxygen tank noise & sleeping on a sofa so i crumbled yesterday had to come home to my bed & home .Still waiting on the key safe & pendant to wear if its an emergency .

She is wanting me at her home all day & I cant, this is not at the stage where pain relief and sleeping all the time & not eating is.

Just need some advice, love her so much but it's hard at the minute.

Any advice would be helpful

Thank you

  • Hi Pinny63 and welcome to our forum.

I’m sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis and how much pressure you have been under. It sounds like an incredibly exhausting and emotional time, especially after everything you have been dealing with yourself as well.

Caring for someone you love at home can be very demanding, both physically and emotionally, and it is clear how much you care about your mum. It is also completely understandable that you reached a point where you needed to go home and rest.

Many people caring for a parent say they feel torn between what their loved one wants and what they themselves can realistically manage. Having carers coming in, even if it feels difficult at first, can really help to share some of that responsibility, so that you are not carrying everything on your own.

You might find it helpful to look at this page from our website about coping as a family member or carer which includes practical advice and support for people in a similar situation.

Best wishes to you and your mum,
