Stressful times - mum diagnosed with terminal lung cancer last year and has now been recommended an ACP care plan. Does anyone know what this involves?

Hi my mum has terminal lung cancer she was diagnosed just before last Xmas she’s very sick now needing lots more care it’s been recommended that she now has an ACP care plan put in place but my brother disagrees he’s been her main carer he’s always lived with mum has no family of his own he’s done so well but he’s very tired I just feel like we are always bickering between us it’s so stressful does anyone know what this care package involves? TIA X

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your mum and the strain this is putting on your relationship with your brother. This must be a very difficult time for you all.

We have some information about the advanced care plan on our website but if you'd like to discuss this further with one of our cancer nurses, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They will be able to answer any further questions you have about this plan and offer emotional support as you try to figure out how to talk to your brother about this.

Speaking of your brother, it sounds like he's been doing an amazing job looking after your mum but as you've mentioned, being a full time carer can be very tiring, so he needs to try and look after himself as well. I hope this information we have about caring for the carer and getting support at home will help you both at this very stressful time.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in this position with their loved ones will share their experiences and advice with you soon but in the meantime, we're thinking of you Michelle and sending you all our strength and support.

    Kind regards,
