Emotions: looking after my 79 year old mum who has pancreatic cancer

I'm looking after my 79 year old mum who has pancreatic cancer which as spread to her kidneys and liver, she was in hospital for 9 days with a chest infection she is now home and has got this cough again iv got antibiotics from doctors but am worried its going to take her because she is so weak now

  • Hi Babboo,

It's so hard to see a loved one so weak and your mum is very lucky to have you by her side especially after spending 9 days in hospital with a chest infection. I hope that the antibiotics do the trick and that the cough improves. It's normal to be worried though but it's so good you can keep an eye on her and if you see that the antibiotics have not worked, you can then get in touch with the doctors and let them know.

It's difficult caring for a loved one with cancer and we have information on our website for family, friends and carers  which has useful tips on how to support someone with cancer and also on taking care of yourself, taking time to recharge your own batteries which is easy to forget but very important too.

We're thinking of you during this challenging time and I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have also been in your position and looked after a loved one with cancer and who know what a distressing time it can be both for your mum and her loved ones.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie
