Husband has been diagnosed with tonsil cancer

My husband was diagnosed with tonsil cancer 3 days ago and was told it's at an advanced stage. He will be starting radiotherapy in January. He's 69 years old and fit for his age. Hoping someone else has been through this and can share experiences in his journey

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to write, I do appreciate it. My husband is due his first treatment on Mon 12th when he will have radiotherapy and chemotherapy. He is due to have a feeding tube fitted on 20th Jan. I didn't know it was possible to go on a liquid diet, I will talk with my husband and see if it's something he want to ask for himself.  We're in Nottingham, so not far from you really. My husband started having to go to a Medical Centre at first, but now it'll be the Hospital where he'll be having his treatment. Staff have been wonderful at both places and very supportive. I wish you well with your treatment and it would be nice if we could update each other on any progress along the way

  • Hiya, of course we can stay in touch... It's always nice to speak to others in a simular situation...

    I'm day 4

Had my chemo Monday and I'm very lucky as I had no side effects.. It's a long day as your pumped full of fluids along with the actual chemo.. I had a couple of anti sickness drips too which definitely helped. I think it took about 12 hours hooked up to the drip.. You can walk about and your hubby will properly wee for England ha ha as what goes in must come out.....

There is no pain with any of the drips.. Not sure if he will be having the blood thinner injection as the actual injection doesn't hurt but the fluid stings like a wasp bite so make him aware. It may also booze but it's normal...

My advice is to take some snacks as the food was lovely but there wasn't much of it so he may get hungry.. Provided he doesn't feel sick with the chemo... I wish his all the best....

It's a truly scary time isn't it and for you as well. My husband is my rock and he is my 100% support. I am SURE you are for your hubby but try and remember you may need some help too... There is lots to offer.. But please feel free to message me anytime.

The best advice is stay posative and deal with each day as it comes.. Don't overthink things and not everyone has the acute side effects they tell you..

Good luck on Monday and let me know how he gets on xxx

    Regards Julie xx

  • Thanks Julie, I really do appreciate hearing from you. I'll be back either Monday or Tuesday next week. Take Care. Best Wishes Julie (My name too :-) ) xx

First day of treatment yesterday and all went well. Was given anti sickness tablets and 12 steroid tablets to take over the next 3 days.

Getting ready now to go to the hospital for 2nd radiotherapy session and on Wednesday will also be seeing a dietician and the consultant.

We're both feeling confident at the moment (just hope it stays that way) and I'll be back to update as soon as there is anything to add.

How are you doing Julie? xx

  • Hiya, That's great news and I'm so pleased it went well.. The anti sickness treatment is a wonder drug as I have had nothing, no sickness at all....  The steroids were fine too had exactly the same.

The dieticians are amazing ask about fortisip and other liquid supplements as they will help

Yes stay positive and confident but also remember it's not wrong to have bad days.. I'm sure we will both have them... This is why it's good to keep catching up xx

I'm doing good, sadly I have quite a bad cold which has left me with a stupid annoying cough.. This is what I think has taken my taste and smell.. I have my weekly review on Thursdays so I will double check..

I have no soreness yet and my skin is absolutely fine thankfully.

Keep going we will both beat this xx

Lovely to hear from you too xx
