Partner had papillary thyroid cancer 4 years ago. Been stable for past 2 years but something found on his neck scan. I don't think I can go through this again

My partner was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer 4 years ago and after 4 operations , radio iodine and radio therapy  hes has been stable for the past 2  years.  His blood levels started to rise so he was sent for an ultra sound on his neck yesterday and they found something on the scan which wasnt there 4 month ago.  He s due to have  a ct scan tomorrow , neck and chest,  but we will not get the results for that for a number of  weeks.  We are also supposed to be  going on a long haul flight for over 2 weeks and as you can imagine we are both in turmoil do we go or dont we?

I suffer with anxiety and it has completely tipped me over the edge and feel as though Im not strong enough to deal with all this again and feel so alone. We both feel like we did when he was first diagnosed 4 years ago, its as though doors are closing behind us all the time.  If it does turn out to be cancer we are also not sure if they will be able to operate because of previous scar tissue, and the said item is near/close to an artery .

  • A very warm welcome to the forum Skye although I'm really sorry to hear about the recent findings on your partner's ultrasound.

This must be such a stressful and worrying time for you both, especially as you thought this was all behind you, but try not to panic or jump to any conclusions until you know more. I know that's much easier said than done when but I hope this guide we have on how to cope with waiting for news will help to settle your nerves whilst you wait.

So many of our members will know what you're going through at the moment Skye, so you are not alone, and hopefully some of them will be along soon to offer you their support and advice.

We also have a team of cancer nurses you can talk to on 0808 800 4040. Their helpline is open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to support you at this time.

Do keep posting if you find it helps Skye and remember that whatever happens, we are here for you.

    Kind regards,
