Mum with ovarian cancer not coping and seems to have given up - I want to help her be prepared for her upcoming operation. What can I do?

My Mum has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, with a mass. She is having surgery in a couple of weeks. Since her diagnosis she has kind of given up, she is not eating much, not exercising and has basically shut off.

I want her to be in the best position for the operation and we as a family are trying to make her see its a positive thing that she has the chance of an operation, but its very frustrating as she is just seeing cancer.

How can i help her?

  • As a very nervous patient (2 years ago, not cancer) I had a life saving operation that I'd delayed for years because of hospital phobia. The staff were amazing. They really put me at ease and gave me the confidence to not run away from the operating table. I'd say to make sure the staff know ahead of the procedure so that they'll help as much as they can as soon as she arrives at the hospital. Good luck with it all, I wish you the very best.
