Mums cervical cancer

Last month my mum was diagnosed with cervical cancer. We are hoping that she will start a 5/6 week course of radio/ chemo therapy.

What can I do to help her through this.

Can she take things with her to appointments to help?

When she comes home of a day, is there anything we can do to help her feel more comfortable.

It’s early days but we as a family are looking for the best options going forward in order to help my mum.

  • Hi ames27,

I am so sorry to hear about your mum's recent cervical cancer diagnosis and I thought you might be interested to know we have information on our website on chemoradiotherapy for cervical cancer. It's so nice of you to want to be there for your mum and support her during this difficult time and you might be able to find inspiration from our section for Family, friends carers which will give you some good tips on how to support someone with cancer. I am not sure what things you were thinking for her to take to appointments to help but books for examples can be great companions in waiting rooms if she likes reading. Members of our community may have other suggestions for her based on their personal experiences of going to appointments.

I guess when your mum comes home for a day, sometimes it's the little thoughts and attentions that can make a massive difference like cooking her favourite meal and just spending time with her, showing her how much you care for her and that you are there if she needs anything. Practical help is also much needed when you're dealing with cancer so she might be appreciate even small things like getting help with the cleaning or laundry. I will let our members come up with more thoughts and insights as many on here will have been in a similar situation before whether they were cancer patients themselves or found themselves like you wanting to support someone with cancer.

Best wishes to you and your mum. I hope that she can start treatment soon and that things improve quickly for her.
