Sister diagnosed with lung Cancer & secondary, rib, shoulder. She lives in another country and I'm going to visit her soon. What can I do to support her?

My sister lives in another country & has been diagnosed last year with Lung cancer. After Chemo & radiation she was told it had cleared. 3 months later it is back and has spread. She started another round of chemo reluctantly yesterday. She was told that if she decided to not have chemo she has a couple of months to live. I am travelling out in a couple of weeks to give her company and help in any way. I am dreading it, I feel sick when I think of going... I needd to get over it. She has little energy & in a lot of pain. Does anyone have any advise on what i can do to make her life better, happier, more comfortable. What food is can make her?

Thank you for any advise.

Best wishes to everyone during this awful journey

  • Hi Cheeky._.bear,

I am so sorry to hear about your sister's lung cancer diagnosis and it must be even harder with her living in another country. What a shock it must have been to find out that it had spread and for her to have had to start another round of chemotherapy. It's so nice of you to travel out to keep her company and to offer help at a time when she needs it the most even though this is a little bit of a scary prospect and it is painful for you to see your sister in so much pain and with so little energy.

She is very lucky to have you wanting to make sure she is ok and has everything she needs. I will share with you the information we have for Family, friends and carers and I would also recommend you read our section on why diet is important which explains why a balanced diet is important when you have cancer.

I hope that you will also hear from other members of our community who have also been in a similar place and have looked after a loved one with cancer. They may well have some good tips for you based on their personal experiences.

    Best wishes,
