Can someone make sense of this situation? Daughter was meant to have surgery if chemo reduced cancerous nodes enough but her oncologist said that was wrong

My daughter was diagnosed with up to 2.5cm cancerous Aorta Lymph Nodes and receiving Chemo, they have shrunk to one cm

Her surgeon said once the nodes had shrunk enough, he can operate to remove them and added her name to the surgical list, she was having another 5 chemo sessions to shrink them even more, imagine our relief

Her Oncologist then told her there will be no operation, apologized for the confusing messages, that surgery would not be possible, took her off the surgery waiting list and reduced the Chemo to reduce side effects which my daughter said she would put up with

She also has cancer of the Colon, Bowel and fallopian tubes

  • Hi BKS0101,

This must be so confusing for you. I can imagine how relieved you were when you found out that the 2.5cm aorta lymph nodes had shrunk to 1cm and you must have been expecting an operation as result. What a shock it must have been to then be told that surgery would not be possible and be taken off the surgery waiting list. You and your daughter must have been very disappointed. It sounds like you deserve a proper explanation - did the oncologist explain to you why surgery would no longer be an option? Make sure you ask them to enlighten you on this and you could also ask why it was decided that the chemotherapy would be reduced. I am not sure myself why there was a change in what was decided originally but I am sure your daughter's medical team will be happy to take the time to explain it thoroughly to you as you should not be left in the dark and you have every right to understand why this decision was taken despite the fact that the lymph nodes had shrunk.

It might also be beneficial for you to talk things through with our cancer nurses and explain the situation to them to see whether they have any thoughts on this - you can call their free helpline on 0808 800 4040 - it is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope you get to talk to your daughter's oncologist about this soon and that you get all the information and the explanations you need.

    Best wishes,
