Head and Neck Cancer: having difficulty obtaining Lidocaine 2% mouthwash on prescription

We are having difficulty obtaining Lidocaine 2% mouthwash on prescription. Currently using Lidocaine Hcl with Hydrocortisone for pain relief but the hydrocortisone is possibly delaying healing of ulceration caused by chemoradiotherapy and have been told to use Lidocaine 2% mouthwash instead but can't get it. Just wondering if there are any alternative mouthwashes which help with severe pain caused by non healing ulceration in the throat please.

  • Hi Bucksfizz100,

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear you have been having difficulty obtaining Lidocaine 2% mouthwash on prescription - I wonder what happened that made it so hard to get on prescription. It sounds like the Lidocaine which contains hydrocortisone is possibly delaying healing so perhaps best to be avoided if that's what you were told. I am not sure really what alternative mouthwash would be an equivalent to Lidocaine 2% and perhaps members of our community will have some suggestions for you based on their personal experiences.

I think it might be worth getting in touch with your GP or medical team and explaining the situation to them if you haven't done so already - mention that you have not been able to get lidocaine 2% mouthwash on prescription, ask whether they know whether this might change and it will become available again and whether they could suggest a suitable alternative which would be available on prescription.

Feel free to give our cancer nurses a call if you would like to ask them advice on this - you can ring their helpline on this free number 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Poor you this sounds so painful and I hope that the ulceration will heal soon and things improve quickly for you.

    Best wishes,
