Mum diagnosed with pelvic and hip cancer that could have been caused by radiotherapy in the past. Has this happened to anyone else?

  1. My mum has been diagnosed with pelvic and hip cancer ...she had ovarian cancer nearly 40 years ago (which had leaked to the pelvis)...this was picked up during a routine ultrasound as she was expect g a baby... I was 12 years old at the time ...my brother was 9 ..it all happened so quick one minute 5 months pregnant then to come round from the op with a full hysterectomy and loss of the baby too ... ..she had radiotherapy of which I can gather didn't pin point specific areas so she was left with a bowl disfunction ie...I guess the muscles in the colon were completely damaged ..so 20 years after she opted for a stoma which for the first 6 months made her life so much better ..she then had a hernia in the stoma and had to have an op to repair it ....the surgeon put some sort of gauze in which stuck to her insides like concrete!!!! So she had to have 2 more ops that same year to repair that! ....she has lived with constant blockages and pain due to this... 2 years ago she had blood in her urine ...loosing weight feeling unwell ...back and forth to the docs only for them to give her antibiotics and vitamin b12 tablets...I took her last year her trousers were falling off her ....but no her height and weight were in normal!? ...the last 4wks she has been suffering with pain in her hip and back ...with trips to A&E...eventually she couldn't walk in absolute excruciating pain! ...they have now diagnosed her with pelvic and hip cancer which possibly was caused by the radiotherapy all those years ago? The doctors are digging up the archives as we speak to find out if this cancer is the same as she had previously....has anyone else been in this situation? Was this radiotherapy husshed up about in the 80's ? It's not about the money I want my mum to be as comfortable as she can from now on ...but I need some answers? Xxx
  • Hi Rjmlem72,

I am sorry to hear about your mum's pelvic and hip cancer diagnosis and thank you for taking the time to share her full story from her diagnosis with ovarian cancer 40 years ago when her cancer was picked up during a routine ultrasound at a time when she was expecting a baby. It must have been a bit of a shock for you all at the time when you and your brother were only children. How traumatic that she had to lose the baby and have a full hysterectomy and your poor mum went through so much after that; I can't believe what she went through with the gauze stuck to her insides and needing an operation to repair that as well. She really went through the wars and I am so sorry to hear that she had to be in excruciating pain unable to walk and taken to A & E before being diagnosed with pelvic and hip cancer.

It's good that the doctors are digging up the archives and investigating whether this pelvic and hip cancer could be linked to the radiotherapy she had all those years ago. I completely understand why you need some answers now and I hope that you find out more soon. You deserve some clarity on what happened and that your mum feels as comfortable as possible from now on.

I hope that you will get the insights on this from other members of our community to whom this sort of thing may have happened before and that they will pop by and share their story with you.

Best wishes to you and your mum,
