Post-Laryngectomy - husband struggling after radiotherapy badly affected his throat. He's unable to communicate and is becoming frustrated and withdrawn

My husband had a laryngectomy last June. Unfortunately the radiotherapy badly affected his throat and he cannot manage more than an occasional explosive work. He is relatively young and not used to failure. He has worked diligently with speech and language therapists but even they are losing heart. He has had 2 rounds of botox injections which did not work. He's tried the electro larynx issued by NHS but it makes so much noise that he can't generate enough sound to compete with it. His throat muscles are thickened by the radio therapy so the only place it will work at all is on his cheek (this may be the problem with his lack of volume)

Is there anyone in a similar position who has found a 'tech' solution? He is becoming isolated, withdrawn, frustrated and angry.

  • A very warm welcome to the Cancer Chat community Philhomena although I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. This must be such a difficult time for you both.

We have some information about regaining speech after a laryngectomy on our website, but if it would help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very well informed, and with their knowledge and insight they will do all they can to answer your questions and will do all they can to help you and your husband find a way for him to communicate once more.

Hopefully you will receive some support and advice from other members who have been through this too, but in the meantime our thoughts are with you and we're sending all our strength and support your way.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
