Family support

Hi my husband has been diagnosed with stage 4  cancer with un known primary.  He has been having lots of scans, tests to find primary cancer secondary has spread to his bones. Until  we get to primary cancer we can not start treatment.  We have 2  children aged 17 and 21.

As a family we are really struggling with this it feels like our lives have been shattered. Our youngest is in the middle of A levels.

Is there any support we can have as a family?

  • Hello Meme1980

I'm sorry to hear that your husband is currently undergoing further tests to try to find the primary cancer. This must be an incredibly worrying and difficult time for you all as you wait for answers and news about treatment options.

What have the specialists said about tests and results? Do you know when you might have some firmer answers and be able to have a discussion about treatment options? We know that for many people, this period of waiting and uncertainty can be really difficult. If it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

In terms of support, it's worth talking with the specialists at the hospital to see what organisations are available in your local area. It may be that there is a Maggie's centre not far from where you live. They offer support to anyone who is impacted by a cancer diagnosis.

We have some information on our website for family and friends that may be helpful, and you might find it useful to look at the resources available on the Hope Support Services website as well. They offer support to young people who have a loved one with a serious illness. As your youngest son heads back to school next week, it's also worth getting in touch with the pastoral team so that they are aware of the situation at home and can provide any additional support he might want or need whilst at school.

I do hope that you have some answers soon Meme1980. Keep in touch with us here at Cancer Chat if it helps to have a safe space to put down in writing how you're feeling or ask any questions. We're here for you.

Sending you all my best wishes,
