No more treatment

My wife started out with pancreatic cancer diagnosed two years ago. After lengthy chemo, a major op which removed the pancreas and spleen we had a short bout of being cancer free but January this year we were given news that it had spread to the lower lobe left lung.

Following this more chemo ensured until now. My wife understands her body and she feels that things are not right. Our consultant meeting is next week and we will get the results of the most recent scan. Knowing how she feels, and if the news is not great she has said NO MORE TREATMENT!

I don’t know how to react to this, I feel she is giving up. I have always respected her decisions and I care for her so much, but I can’t or don’t know how to respond or deal with this

  • Hi Jonny36,

I am so sorry to hear about your wife's pancreatic cancer diagnosis and it's so sad that the cancer returned and spread to the lower lobe left lung. I hope that the consultant meeting goes well next week. I can imagine your wife is a bit apprehensive especially if she feels that things are not quite right. It must be hard to see your wife wanting to give up - she might be feeling this way because of the fear of the unknown at the moment as she is waiting for the scan results and is understandably worried about it. It's so hard for you to know how to deal with this and reading your message on here it transpires how much you care for her so I think all you can do really is keep doing what you are already doing so well, being there for her, giving her encouragement, listening to her and supporting her.

There is information on our website for Family, friends and carers which will give you some useful tips on how to support someone with cancer and also which is important to take care of yourself as it's vital too that you find time for yourself to get some rest from time to time during this tough time.

Best of luck for the meeting next week. I hope you get some answers soon and that you find out more about the treatment options. Don't hesitate to ask questions to the consultant so that you can both make an informed decision and understand all the facts after you get the results.

Other members of our community may have been in a similar place before and I hope that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you. Our cancer nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you would like to talk things through with them. Their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
