My son has cancer of the duodenum and has a rig for feeding. Does anyone have any tips that could help him put on weight?

My son has cancer of the duodenum and has a rig for feeding and draining of blocked bile ducts. He has had two rounds of chemotherapy and one of radiotherapy and is doing reasonably well.

He has lost an awful lot of weight and is terribly thin and his oncologist says that he needs to put weight on. Has anyone got ideas as he can do this as his feed is measured and at present, unable to eat. Many thanks.

  • Hello Nov-ember

I'm sorry to hear that your son is currently undergoing treatment for cancer of the duodenum. Undoubtedly, it's a difficult time for you all.

You've mentioned that he has a RIG in situ for nutrition and that his feeds are measured, and that the oncologist has said that your son needs to gain some weight. Did the oncologist say whether he would be referring your son to the dietician or the specialist team that initially gave you support and advice with feeding and the RIG?

If you have a specialist nurse that you're able to contact for advice and support, then do give them a call as they will be able to help with any adjustments that need to be made to the measured feed that your son is currently having. If you have contact details for the dietician team, then you can also give them a call to explain what the Oncologist has said, and they can make any adjustments or arrangements that may be necessary.

Hopefully, with a phone call or two, you'll be able to get the support he needs to help manage his weight during treatment and this will make things a little easier. Do let us know how he gets on.

    Best wishes,
