Immunotherapy information

Hi does anyone have any information about immunotherapy treatment.

My husband had a radical cystectomy and nephrectomy in May. We had hoped the tumour in his ureter was contained but results have shown cells in the fat and blood vessels I the surrounding tissue. Basically there is no guarantee it has all been removed.

He has been referred for immunotherapy but we don't know anything about it. Tia

  • Hi Alice

Your husband has certainly been through a lot and now to find out that there may be some cancer remaining must be worrying for you both.

Immunotherapy works enabling the immune system to recognise and attack cancer cells. There are several medicines available that target specific cancers, your husband will likely get pembrolizumab. There are lots of posts on this forum about Pembro. It is given in hospital via a drip every few weeks. Do not be put off by the dire list of possible side effects most people tolerate it quite well and are closely monitored. It can prolong life expectancy and quality. Im on Cemiplimab and Denosumab for advanced skin cancer which has spread to my bones. It has visibly shrunk tumours and slowed the spread. Side effects are fatigue and skin rash which are manageable. If your husband is offered the treatment then take it. Wishing you the best possible outcome.

  • Thank you for the reply. We have an appointment on Tuesday with the oncologist so hopefully we'll get more information then.

He has been through so much already, I know they can never guarantee a 'cure' but we had hoped the surgery would be the end for now at least.

I wish you well in your treatment, take care.
