Sister in law had operation for throat cancer. She's now has terrible anxiety and a feeling of not being able to swallow properly

Hi

My sister in law had an operation for throat cancer and has been left with terrible anxiety and a feeling that she cant  swallow properly.   It’s 18 months since her operation and I was wondering if anyone on here is having the same problems as my sister in law.   I hate to see her in such distress!

  • Welcome to the forum Linda although I'm very sorry to hear about the issues your sister in law has been contending with since having her operation 18 months ago. It must be very difficult to see how this has affected her.

I'm not sure from your post if your sister in law has spoken to anyone about her anxiety but if she hasn't, maybe this is something you could suggest? Many of our members have found it really helpful to speak to someone about how they are feeling at various stages of their cancer journeys so this may be something your sister in law could benefit from as well. We have some information about life beyond cancer and counselling on our website, but your sister in law should also be able to get further support and advice from her GP and/or medical team.

Hopefully some of our throat cancer members will be along soon to share their stories and advice, but if it would help to talk about this with one of our cancer nurses, you can do so on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They will do all they can to support you and help you figure out how you can best help your sister in law.

You may also be interested in having a look at this discussion about life after throat cancer that was created by a member called Stongue towards the end of last year, as what they have described sounds very similar to what your sister in law is going through. I'm not sure if they are still active on the forum but there's no harm in trying to reach out to them if you'd like to find out how they're getting on now.

    Kind regards,
