A second opinion?

Apologies if this has been well covered previously ... I'm new here.

My partner has recently been diagnosed with liver cancer by the team at our local hospital (which has a good reputation). They said that it's inoperable - and that any intervention they make would detract from his quality of life, so have recommended that they carry out no treatments.

I'm obviously not looking for a different diagnosis - or even some sort of "magic" solution - but do feel that he ought to get a second opinion, and I wondered what other people's views are. If we went down that route, I'd also be interested in some suggestions about how we should go about it ... for example, does he need to ask the consultant that saw him? (The GP is probably not a very useful vehicle.)

Any comments/ideas very welcome.

  • Hi Jayvee and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sorry to hear your partner has been diagnosed with liver cancer and that your local hospital has recommended no treatment should take place.

This must have been very difficult to hear and it's completely understandable, and natural, why you'd like a second opinion.

I hope this information we have on getting a second opinion will help, but hopefully some of our members who have been down this route will stop by soon to offer their input and advice.

We also have a team of cancer nurses you can talk to about this on 0808 800 4040. Their helpline is open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to answer your questions and address any other queries or concerns you may have about your partner's situation at this time.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
