Father in law diagnosed with mouth cancer and my 5 year old son has found this very hard, saying he misses 'my old granda'

My father in law was diagnosed with mouth cancer, a tumor at the back of his throat in March. My middle child, just turned 5 and him were very very close. Spending a couple of times a week together every week. FIL had to get a tracheostomy, meaning now he can’t eat, speak or drink. After two months in hospital with complications he is finally in a cancer ward getting treatment, we are on week 4 with about 4 more weeks to go. But my son has found this so hard, esp as he can’t talk back to him, almost scared of him at time. So has become very emotional and alot of violent outbursts at home and school. Talks about him all the time like he his passed away, saying he misses his granda, and when we say sure you just seen him he will say no I miss my old granda. Not too sure how to handle things or where to look for for help for him as the dr told me they usually look to the schools, and his school has no funding. Anyone any ideas?? Have got the books “when someone I love has cancer” and “the invisible string” already
