Husband's new diagnosis prostate/lung

Hello,

My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 (Gleason 9) prostate cancer 2 years ago. He's kept really well, had radiotherapy and is taking Apalutamide. He's 61, and was otherwise, fit and active. There was a tiny dot on his rib found at the same time.

Recently he thought he'd fractured a rib, so popped down for an XRay. No broken rib, but a shadow seen on his right lung. He was quickly seen for a CT and this morning we heard he has a 3cm x 3cm mass on his right lower lobe. Biopsy to follow. His Oncologist says as his PSA is currently undetectable, he thinks its unlikely to be a metastasis...but seems more likely to me. But what do I know....?

I try really hard to stay balanced, deal with facts, etc but I'm thrown this morning. What happens next?

Brutally speaking...am I going to lose him sooner? Is this the start of the end? It's unbearable.

Thank you for being there.

  • If you have a cancer, you're more susceptible to a second, believe it or not. The likelihood is low, but the chances are elevated compared to people without cancer. So it could be a new primary.

I don't think anyone can give you an answer to your main question, nor should they. Everyone is different and only the treating doctors can even begin to give you a guesstimate.

  • Hello Geegely

I am so sorry that you find yourselft hear.    Its good to hear that the Oncologosist has said your husbands PSA is currently undetectable.  Its clear your being strong and deal with facts and are their supporting your husband.  But its a shock to get told of another diagnosis.  Did they not monitor the dot found on his rib at the time.  I feel for you so much and your husband.  Write down all the questions you have for the oncologist.  I hope you have family and friends around to support you both.  Try to take one day at a time, easy for me to say when you have been through so much.  I hope others come along who you find helpful.  I lost my husband nearly 9 years ago so have empathy for you both.  Sending you both love and hugs take care xx

  • Thank you for your kindness.

No, no further scans since the original one. It's frustrating but I understand everyone can't be scanned all the time.

    • Again, thank you. X
